Big moves can be made, too — just look at what happened during July and August of last year. Tiger’s not in the field, but there’s still plenty to be excited about this week — a strong field and a grand old course. Players are looking to fine tune their games with the British Open not far away, and we’ll look to match that effort with a sharp week of handicapping. Let’s get to the racing form.

The AT&T National is missing eight of the top 10 players in the world, only one of them on crutches. “As everyone knows, I’m not going to be there to play in the event,” Tiger Woods said. He won’t be at Royal Birkdale or Oakland Hills for the final two majors. He won’t get to wear a tuxedo for the gala dinner at the Ryder Cup.

With his victory last week at the Commerce Bank Championship, Loren Roberts has eight Champions Tour wins to go with eight PGA TOUR titles.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — While the top-five players remained unchanged in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, Loren Roberts moved closer to the top with his victory last week at the Commerce Bank Championship. The New York victory helped Roberts move to within 23 points of Scott Hoch, who is in third place. Jay Haas remains the overall leader, followed by Bernhard Langer. Jeff Sluman is in fifth.

Sometimes you just have to think there’s another force at work. Justin Hicks entered last week’s Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic presented by Samsung in 160th place on the money list. He was assigned locker number 99 (Gretzky’s uniform number) and went on to win the tournament hosted by the Great One and jumped all the way to 13th and in strong position to finish among “THE 25″.

Craig Barlow began his final round last week at the Buick Open in exciting fashion. He made an eagle 3 on the opening hole. What made it particularly exciting is that he holed a 111-foot, 5-inch putt to do so. That’s easily the longest putt made this season, topping the 76-foot effort of Justin Rose.

It’s a Tiger-less tournament hosted by Tiger. If you made plans to attend the AT&T National and are disappointed that the world’s No. 1 won’t be there (because he’s still at home recovering from his reconstructive knee surgery), don’t get too down about it. Tiger’s still excited to have his tournament “in our nation’s capital on our nation’s birthday,” and you should be, too.

The Nationwide Tour is idle this week as America celebrates its Independence Day holiday. Tournament play resumes next week (July 7-13) with a milestone event, the Nationwide Tour Players Cup — the Tour’s first $1-million event. The Players Cup will be held at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, W. Va., and will feature the current 144 leading money winners on the Nationwide Tour.

Where are we? The Land of Enchantment. But might we suggest a new nickname for New Mexico — the Outer Space State. Roswell, N.M., known throughout the world for a mysterious UFO encounter in 1947 (more on that later), is located in this scenic state. Plus, Virgin Galactic, the first tourism company to send ordinary citizens into space — for a hefty chunk of change, of course — is located in Upham, N.M.
